Morocco's glittering bohemian city is brighter than ever with a new package of fabulous hotels

Four Seasons Marrakech

There are stranger, more boho places to stay in Marrakech with little travellers. Fawakay Villas has a Berber tent in the garden for sleeping, for example, while Beldi Country Club is a rustic-chic enclave with pottery and horse riding lessons. But for a gentle introduction to North Africa, the Four Seasons Resort Marrakech is safe and reliable, yet has an exciting excitement factor.

On arrival, there are silver trays of mint tea and small bowls of almonds in the lobby, where children are mesmerised by the chirping of the giant white cage. At night, the hotel is a glittering, candlelit spectacle, and the rooms are scented with orange or pink. The children fall in love with the atmosphere and squeal for in-room surprises such as chocolate biscuits, mini dressing gowns, mini Djellaba (for sleeping) and toy camels. The children's club can organise everything from belly dancing to bread baking, and the staff seem to be permanently on an over-the-top cartoon. There is a warm, shallow pool for the little ones, a basketball net, film screenings, picnics and games on speed dial.

While all this is going on, parents can dive into the refreshing calm of the spa for an authentic hammam - including cold-water hammams - followed by the most delicious fresh rosemary and geranium tea. Or play tennis, take a yoga class or simply relax in the sun. There are two pools - one for adults only, a dream of symmetry, the other a sprawling, free-form frenzy of floats, balls and water bombs. The cabanas provide much-needed shade, the wood-fired pizzas are perfect and the homemade ice creams are irresistible.

Villas in a secret garden

These are some serious digs: a total of 54 deeply private, one- and two-bedroom villas, all with creamy stone floors and tadelakt-carved walls framed by majestic columns (there are also nine first-floor rooms with fabulous views of the Atlas Mountains). The outdoor showers are enclosed with bamboo, while the courtyards have crackling wood fires and there are marble hammams in the bathrooms. A walk through the 20 hectares of gardens, perfumed with the scent of 100,000 roses, leads to a spa and hammam of epic proportions, unfolding in a series of graceful arches like those of the Mezquita in C? Rdoba. It is attention to handmade details such as these that distinguishes the Mandarin from the blingy five-stars of the city, and there are other carefully curated things too - from preparing dishes for dinner with high-flying chef Meryem Cherkaoui to visiting Zitouna, the resident donkey, in the organic vegetable and herb garden that will soon sprout the coolest bar in town. When the heat of the day gets too much, sneak back into the villa and spend the afternoon snoozing on a king-size sofa bed by the pool. This is a place to relax around all the extras, from yoga sessions to an in-room dinner put together by a private chef. By Tara Stevens
